We understand that in today’s busy world, individuals who want to make a difference in their communities are looking for involvement opportunities with flexibility and options. Our program offers a wide range of opportunities.  No

Volunteer Opportunities

 

General volunteer - Be contacted as a variety of short-term opportunities come up during the school year, such as preparing classroom materials, organizing donations, or processing mailings. Assist with activities, special events, fundraisers or projects during the school year. Opportunities are versatile and some projects you can even take and complete at home!

 

Classroom volunteer -Assist teachers and children in daily preschool activities and routines. Read stories, do puzzles, build castles, paint rainbows and bake pretend cookies with our little friends

 

Childcare volunteer - Read stories, do puzzles, build castles, paint rainbows, and bake pretend cookies with our children while their parents attend a Head Start activity during evening hours.

 

Office volunteer -   Assist with filing, data entry, typing, copying, mailings, collating materials, and related clerical tasks. 

 

Bilingual volunteer -  Assist non-English speaking families during the application process, home-visits or

parent/teacher conferences. Help with translating notes sent home to parents, or help in the classroom with non-English speaking children.

 

Group Volunteers

Sponsor a collection drive with your group for our agency.  Classroom art supplies, healthy snacks, office supplies, children’s books, and paper goods would all be wonderful additions and help so much in supporting program needs. 

 

Sponsor a fundraiser Do something fun at work with your colleagues or your group, like a chili contest, or a cake decorating competition. These activities can translate into funding a preschool field trip, an on-site children’s theatre or puppet show, or classroom art supplies . 

 

Organize dinner out at a local restaurant - designating profit percentage to Head Start. (Contact us for a list of restaurants that offer fundraiser programs.)

 

Group Volunteer Service Day – schedule a day for your group to volunteer at Head Start.  Group projects in the past have included activities such as planting a butterfly garden, computer assistance, adding mulch to our playground, hosting a children’s pizza party, and sponsoring a summer splash day.

Head Start of Shawnee Mission, Inc.

No commitment is too small. Involvement opportunities are available both on and off the Head Start site. Being involved and supporting our program could be as simple as eating out at a particular restaurant on a designated night, where a percentage of the proceeds are given to our programs. Or perhaps you have a special talent or skill that may translate to volunteer work. Please contact us at info@smks-headstart.org to learn more about becoming a friend of Head Start.
