Text Box: The most common myth about Head Start of Shawnee Mission is that we are fully funded by the federal government. We are not. For every $100 we receive in federal funding, we are mandated to match 25 percent. This, combined with the fact that federal funding has remained flat for a number of years while the cost of doing business continues to rise, is why we hold a variety of events to raise funds and community awareness in support of the children and families we serve.

Wine and Art!

When the boredom of January begins to take its toll, we host our Annual Wine and Art Event! Attendees taste a variety of wines and enjoy a local gallery with friends while supporting Head Start of Shawnee Mission. The venue changes annually; past locations have included the Leopold Gallery, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art and the Prairiebrooke Gallery. With music, a display and silent auction of our children’s art and an opportunity to see an artist at work, this informal event becomes more popular each year.

Village Crawfish Festival Annual Boil + BBQ
April 24, 2010

We are thrilled to be selected as the recipient of funds from the Annual Crawfish Boil and BBQ for the second year in a row! This is one of the most fun events in town, with all the spicy crawfish, roast pig and BBQ you can eat, along with all the trimmings, then you can dance it all off to live music! For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the Secret Order of Crawdaddies’ website at www.crawdaddies.org.

Other Community Events!

As we ride out the current economic challenges, we find ourselves looking for more creative ways to raise funds. If you, too, are looking for ways to be creative with your philanthropic efforts, please consider hosting a fundraiser with your school, office, church, book club, family or friends; and designate Head Start of Shawnee Mission as the recipient of the dollars you raise. It’s never too early—or too late—to teach the importance of helping others. The rewards benefit everyone!

From a bake sale to a car wash, a garage sale to a chili supper, there are a wealth of ways you can help Head Start of Shawnee Mission, teach your group the value of charitable giving, and have fun in the process!

If you have an idea to share, please let us know!
