Families qualify for Early Head Start or Head Start services based upon meeting the following three criteria:
Residency – families must reside within the current Shawnee Mission School District boundaries (County Line Road on the north, State Line Road on the east, I-435 on the south and Ogg Road on the west).
Income – Priority is given to families with incomes at or below the federal poverty level (readjusted annually by the federal government). For the current guidelines, see http://aspe.hhs.gov/poverty/08poverty.shtml.
Age – Children must meet the age guidelines for each program. The Early Head Start program accepts pregnant women, infants, and toddlers up to age 3. The Head Start program accepts children ages 3 through 4 as of August 31 of each year.
Getting Started — Families may apply every Tuesday from 1:30 to 4:30 pm, except holidays. To apply, you must bring the following pieces of information: · Birth certificate for each child applying · Proof of residence—usually a utility bill or current lease agreement. It must include your name, current address and a date within the past 30 days. · Proof of income—current tax return or W-2 or 12 months of income · Proof of child support received for 12 months if applicable. · Proof of SSI or TAF if you are currently receiving it or have received it within the past year.
