Volunteer
No commitment is too small. Involvement opportunities are available both on and off the Head Start site.

Being involved and supporting our program could be as simple as eating out at a particular restaurant on a designated night, where a percentage of the proceeds are given to our programs. Or perhaps you have a special talent or skill that may translate to volunteer work. Please contact us at info@smks-headstart.org to learn more about becoming a friend of Head Start. We look forward to exploring the possibilities together.
Be contacted as a variety of short-term opportunities arise throughout the school year, such as preparing classroom materials, organizing donations, or processing mailings or preparing gift bags for families. Assist with activities, special events, fundraisers or projects. Some of the projects you can take and complete at home.
Assist with filing, data entry, typing, copying, mailings, collating materials, operating paper shredder or laminator and related clerical tasks.
Assist teaching staff and children in daily classroom activities and routines. Read stories, do puzzles, build castles, paint rainbows and bake pretend cookies with our little friends.
Read and play with our children while their parents attend a Head Start activity during evening hours.
Assist non-English speaking families during the application process, home visits or parent/teacher conferences. Help with translating notes sent home to parents, or assist in the classroom with non-English speaking children.
Sponsor a drive for much needed agency items such as breakfasts and snacks, and books, or coordinate a collection for classroom art supplies, toothpaste/toothbrushes, or paper goods. Please check with us on our wish list needs for this year!
Work with your group in promoting a fund-raising event. Events can be as creative as you are: charge for casual day at work, sponsor a chili contest, organize dinner out at a local restaurant where a profit percentage would be designated to Head Start of Shawnee Mission. Uses for funds can include field trips for preschoolers, new educational materials, providing an on-site storyteller or puppet show, and more.
We welcome group service days! Group projects in the past have included activities such as planting flower, vegetable and butterfly gardens, painting, cleaning, computer assistance, adding mulch to our playground, and hosting a children’s activity, such as a summer splash day.
We understand that in today’s busy world, individuals who want to make a difference in their communities are looking for involvement opportunities with flexibility and options. Our program offers a wide range of opportunities.
